What the ESU means to me

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the European Summer University in Digital Humanities "Culture & Technology" - the first ESU DH startet the 27th of July 2009 - we invite you to share your personal thoughts about the ESU. Whether you have participated only once many years ago or whether you have taken part several times is not important. Important is what the ESU means for you, what it stands for, whether you had good or bad experiences, whether you have good or not so good memories of the time you spent in Leipzig. Were you able to make use of what you learnt? Did your participation in the ESU play a role in your career? Did you make friends / build up a network? Are friendships still alive? Is the network still in place?

Obviously we are also greatful if you remind us when you have participatet in the ESU, because the ESU has changed over the years and your feedback needs to be seen, most certainly, in the context of the various editions. If you have participated more than once, we would also be interested to know, what you think about the changes the ESU has undergone.

We are looking forward very much to your multi-lingual birthday thoughts!

If you have pictures you would like to share with us and other participants, you are most welcome to send them to: esu_ct@uni-leipzig.de with the subject line "photos ESU XXXX", where XXXX stands for year. We will create an extra page with all the pictures you share with us. Should you not be happy if a picture of yourself appears on this page, then you will need to tell us and we delete it straight away.

Please note: We only monitor the site in order to avoid spam. We do not censor comments which regard the Sommer University.

Happy 10th Birthday, ESU DH!

It is hard to believe that we're celebrating 10 years already -- a community ever young-at-heart, marked by international collegiality, caring and insightful leadership, thoughtful shared inquiry and exploration, collaboration, and friendship. Every year I've attended, I've come with high expectations that were somehow exceeded, always; every time I've returned home afterwards, it has been with a tremendous gain in my understanding of the field and with warm memory of time with friends, old and new ... as well as a few new projects. This is a place that lays foundation, that brings people together, and in doing so is where career- and life-long connections are made. Happy 10th Birthday, ESU DH!

Beautifully put, Ray! I will reflect on the past three years a little more before responding...

Happy birthday, ESU, cheers to you!

This is my first time here and I am so grateful I had the chance to participate, as it gave me so much, I can't even express it yet in words. Besides the contacts I made with all so many people from all over the world and the material I learned here, the ESU actually managed to put my somehow slowed down thinking into motion again and now I finally know where to start my research from. Thank you and long live the ESU!

Reflections on ESUDH 2019 from Perth, Australia

For the last three summers, ESUDH has been the most profound learning event I have experienced since completing my PhD. This is due to the wonderfully generous and learned teachers, the thought-provoking lecturers, the patient and accommodating organising committee, and last but not least the incredible visionary, responsible, and social justice-minded leadership of Professor Dr Elisabeth Burr. My hope is that many of us meet again next year, and I also sincerely hope that all of you will seriously consider diverse and creative proposals -- individually and communally -- to submit to the DH 2020 (Ottawa) portal, which opens on August 15, 2019 (in 10 days). Here is a link to that portal with the Call for Proposals (CFP) in multiple languages:

Thanks for an amazing two weeks, everyone!
