"Culture & Technology" European Summer University in Digital Humanities

Round Table

Friday, the 31st of July 2009 from 16:15 to 17:45 a Round Table discussion took place in the lecture hall 2010 in the GWZ. This last session of the 1st European Summer School "Culture & Technology" was open to the public. The theme of the discussion was „Digital Humanities – New Questions? New Synergies?“

The following people have agreed to take part in the discussion:
  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Holländer, Vice-Rector for Structural Development of the University of Leipzig and Professor for Environmental Technology / Environmental Management (Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Harold Short, Director of the Centre for Computing in the Humanities, King’s College London (Great Britain)
  • Prof. Dr. Dino Buzzetti, Professor for the History of Medieval Philosophy, University of Bologna (Italy)
  • Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schneider, Director of the University Library Leipzig (Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Ulrich Eisenecker, Professor for Information Systems / Software Engineering, University of Leipzig (Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Ulrich Brieler, Historian, representing the government of the City of Leipzig (Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Burr, Professor for French, Francophone and Italian Linguistics, University of Leipzig (Germany)
  • Amy Römer, student of Romance Studies at the University of Leipzig (Germany)
  • Pascal Kovacs, student of Information Science at the University of Leipzig (Germany)
At the beginning of the session the participants of the round table have been asked to make a short statement (5-7 minutes) on the following topics:
  • “The crucial role Digital Humanities has to play in academe, society and education” – Prof. Harold Short (Digital Humanities )
  • “Digital Humanities, Information Science and Engineering. Views on possible synergies in research and teaching - Prof. Holländer (Engineering), Prof. Ulrich Eisenecker (Information Science)
  • „The role of libraries in the development of knowledge societies and the preservation of cultural heritage” - Prof. Schneider (Library)
  • “The creation of European networks and Master programmes in order to be able to face the needs of young scholars for inter- and trans-disciplinary qualifications” - Prof. Dino Buzzetti (Philosophy)
  • “Culture, Society and Technology. What are the challenges?” – Prof. Ulrich Brieler (Historian)
  • “Experiences with the integration of Humanities and IT. A students view on new questions and new synergies” – Amy Römer (Romance Studies), Pascal Kovacs (Information Science)
  • The gender divide - bridging "hard" and "soft" – Prof. Elisabeth Burr (Romance Linguistics)

After these short statements there was a discussion among the participants of the Round Table (ca. 15 minutes) and then the discussion was opened to the floor.
