Basic Statistics and Visualization with R

This one week course introduces participants to the logic and the basics of simple statistical description, analysis, and visualization using the popular open-source programming language R. In a first part of the course, I will introduce the logic of statistical analysis/testing. Then, we will deal with the basic ways in which data are entered, imported, and manipulated in(to) R. In the main part, we will then turn to descriptive statistics and graphs for categorical, ordinal, and numeric data as well as basic statistical testing. In contrast to most introductions to statistical analysis, this course will mention well-known statistical tests such as t-tests and chi-squared tests, but will treat them as simple instances of regression modeling. This will not only allows us to cover a variety of statistical tests in a much more unified way than is typically possible, but also make this course an ideal preparation for a potential follow-up next year on advanced regression modeling.
