From father Busa to Linked Data. What does Thomas Aquinas have to do with the Semantic Web

Il padre gesuita italiano Roberto Busa viene sempre citato tra i pionieri di quella che oggi è chiamata Linguistica Computazionale e/o Informatica Umanistica. Il principale lavoro per cui egli è noto è il cosidetto Index Thomisticus, un corpus costruito in circa 30 anni che raccoglie l'opera omnia di Tommaso d'Aquino.

Nel corso dello sviluppo dell'Index Thomisticus, padre Busa si rese conto del fatto che una svolta metodologica stava per accadere, proprio a causa delle nuove sfide aperte dal trattamento a computer di dati testuali. Un nuovo tipo di umanesimo, fatto di risultati replicabili e documentazioni complete, stava prendendo forma.

Per Busa, infatti, l'automazione non rende la vita più facile, ma anzi "attende molto di più dall'industriosità spirituale dell'uomo". Grandi risultati scaturiranno da uno sforzo senza precedenti. Non solo ciò renderà le scienze umanistiche più scientifiche, ma le farà anche più umanistiche, poiché richiederà un nuovo tipo di "conosci te stesso".
L'assiduo confronto con i dati empirici, richiesto dalla necessità di trattare i testi a computer, ci mostra i nostri limiti, che sono innanzitutto limiti umanistici, se è vero che non siamo neppure "dire come parliamo" (Busa, 1958, p. 840).

Il mio intervento mira a trattare alcune idee di fondo di Busa, facendo un viaggio attraverso una serie di suoi scritti compresi tra gli anni 50 e gli anni 80 (tutti in corso di ripubblicazione in un volume di prossima uscita).

Inoltre, presenterò del materiale originale tratto dall'Archivio Busa dell'Università Cattolica di Milano. L'archivio, raccolto da Busa nel corso della sua vita, include articoli di stampa nazionale e internazionale, corrispondenza personale, materiali relativi a diverse fasi dell'Index Thomisticus, oltre che l'opera omnia di Busa. Alla luce di ciò, l'Archivio rappresenta una inestimabile fonte di documentazione per chiunque sia interessato alla storia della disciplina.

Infine, l'intervento accennerà allo stato attuale dell'Index Thomisticus, fornendo una panoramica dell'Index Thomisticus Treebank e della sua prossima inclusione in una Knowledge Base di risorse linguistiche e strumenti per il latino fondata su Linked Data, la cui realizzazione è stata recentemente finanziata con un ERC-Consolidator Grant (Grant Agreement No 769994).
